UBEC Inaugurates DRC Research Screening Committee

The UBEC Digital Resource Center held a 5-day Research workshop to inaugurate the Research Screening Committee and launch the second phase of its activities.

The workshop aimed to assess the 78 concept notes submitted to the Screening Committee for consideration and to select the most promising research areas for advancing smart education in Nigeria.

The research workshop was also designed to promote innovation in the basic education sector, enhance the evaluation criteria for concept notes, and ensure that the proposed research is in line with Nigeria’s need for a smarter, technology-driven education system.

UBEC Hones Digital Education Content Creation Skills in Teachers

The UBEC Digital Resource Center conducted a 5-day school-based Training on Instructional Design and Multimedia Content Development for teachers in Nigeria’s 14 functional Smart Schools.

The five-day training exercise aimed to equip the Smart School teachers with competencies in using advanced instructional design techniques and multimedia content development authoring tools such as Canva, Microsoft PowerPoint, and iSpring Suites to benefit their learners.

These skills will enable the teachers to curate high-quality digital learning content for the consumption of their learners to promote better classroom collaboration and engender positive learning outcomes.

Honourable Ministers of Education Inspect Karshi Smart School

14th August 2024

The Honourable Ministers of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman and Dr Tanko Sununu paid a scheduled inspection visit to the UBE Model Smart School located in Karshi, Abuja to assess the level of preparedness of the school for the commencement of academic activities in the forthcoming September 2024/2025 academic session.

During the visit, discussions centred on the school development plan, security measures, teacher welfare, and other operational aspects of the smart school. The Ministers congratulated the UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi on the impressive interactive learning environment design while describing the smart school as a model for the future that will effectively enhance and transform basic education delivery.

Prof. Mamman assured the UBEC ES that the federal government is committed to providing high-quality education and will support digital educational content development. He also expressed confidence in the smart school initiative and pledged a follow-up visit in the coming year.

UBEC Trains Smart Teachers as Digital Education Content Creators

13th-17th August 2024

The Universal Basic Education Commission conducted a 5-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre, Abuja.

The training aimed to enhance the competencies of the Smart School teachers in instructional design and multimedia content development using Microsoft PowerPoint, Canva for Education, and iSpring Suite.

Sixteen (16) educators from Adamawa, Benue, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina, Kwara, Oyo, and Osun UBE Model Smart Schools participated in the training workshop. Consequently, they will serve as master trainers in the forthcoming school-based instructional design and multimedia content development training and cascade the knowledge and skills gained during the ToT down to their peers.

UBEC Set to Launch New Model Smart Schools in Nigeria

The Universal Basic Education Commission is gearing up to unveil twelve (12) new Model Smart Schools nationwide.

This information was contained in a statement by the National Coordinator of the UBEC Digital Resource Center, Professor Bashir Galadanci during an interactive session with stakeholders of the UBE Smart Schools Programme at the DRC Complex, Kado, Abuja.

The UBE Commission has already rolled out fourteen (14) functional Smart Schools in different parts of the country. The additional twelve (12) Model Smart Schools expected to commence academic activities in September 2024 will bring the total number of operational Smart Schools in Nigeria to twenty-six (26).

UBEC DRC Participates in NDEC Exhibition

The UBEC Digital Resource Center participated in the second edition of the Nigeria Data Expo Conference (NDEC) held at ‘Yaradua Center, Abuja. The exhibition featured the UBEC DRC stall where information regarding the programmes and activities of the Center was prominently displayed.

The primary objective of the Conference was to explore the multifaceted nature of data application in driving societal advancement. Specifically, the conference highlighted the significance of digital literacy in educational institutions, discussed the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) implementation of the National Digital Literacy Framework.

The Conference also addressed the critical role that data plays in modern society and discussed the utilization of data in the proposed smart city initiative and strategies for the commercialization of research and innovation, as underscored by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Science and Technology.

UBEC DRC Onboards Research Screening Committee

The Research Unit of the Universal Basic Education Commission’s Digital Resource Center (DRC) held a 3-day onboarding workshop for members of the Screening Committee for the DRC Research project.

The workshop was designed to provide orientation and guidance to the screening committee on the task at hand and equip them with the necessary tools and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

During the workshop, the committee engaged in interactive sessions in which they reviewed the draft research manual, policy document, and work plan. Additionally, discussions were held to understand the criteria for selecting research materials, the goals of the UBEC DRC project, and the overall vision of the organization.

The UBEC Digital Resource Center held a two-day Workshop to train its Staff and some selected teachers from the operational Smart Schools on the concept and significance of establishing a viable Community of Practice.

The Workshop was facilitated by a team of expert resource persons who made insightful presentations on the need to build a community of practice through fostering genuine relationships that will nurture a culture of learning and consistently give value and choosing the right platform to encourage engagement and knowledge sharing.

UBEC Conducts Training on Utilization of Studio Equipment

The Universal Basic Education Commission’s Digital Resource Centre conducted a 3-day training on the utilization of Multimedia Studio Equipment to develop the capacity and enhance the skills of selected teachers from the 14 operational Smart Schools, staff of the UBEC DRC and some officers from the Public Relation Unit of the Commission.

The training aimed to equip the participants with practical knowledge and provide a hands-on experience in managing multimedia studio equipment used for educational content creation, video production and multimedia presentations.

The three-day exercise also furnished the participants with the skills required in the production of high-quality educational materials and enhance multimedia communication through a combination of lectures, practical exercises, and group activities.

DRC Embarks on Field Tests in Readiness for TIS Synchronous Phase

10th-11th June 2024

A two-day Field test activity was conducted in readiness for the Synchronous Phase of the Teacher Internship Scheme (TIS) Training Programme. The exercise involved Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and Google form surveys with the participants of the Teacher Internship Scheme posted to Smart Schools and E-learning Centers.

The synchronous phase of the TIS training programme being the last phase of the primer course is a crucial step towards ensuring the overall success of the primer course. The insights garnered during the field test are expected to facilitate the effective implementation of a successful synchronous phase.

The two-day exercise was simultaneously held in Nasarawa and Kano States respectively.
