KOICA trains 29 Nigerian Smart Schools Guiding Teachers in Korea

As part of the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Nigeria through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the government of South Korea through the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the training of basic education teachers in the subject areas of Mathematics and Science is a crucial component towards the improvement of access to quality smart education in Nigeria. In light of this, KOICA organized an invitational training programme in Korea for its six supported States consisting of Anambra, Bauchi, Ekiti, Cross River, Kano and Nasarawa States.

The invitational training was designed to develop the capacities and skills of the guiding teachers in the aspect of digital literacy and the creation of digital content in the subject areas of Mathematics and Science. The training also aimed to familiarize the trainees with the utilization of digital devices and the use of advanced applications in classroom lesson delivery. Additionally, the guiding teachers were groomed to take on their roles as master trainers who are expected to serve as pathfinders to other Nigerian teachers by subsequently cascading the training received effectively.

The training sessions successfully enhanced the digital literacy, content creation, and device utilization skills of the guiding teachers especially in Mathematics and Science. Moreover, it has equipped them with the necessary expertise to train and mentor other teachers in effective smart education practices across Nigeria.

The training programme projected fresh perspectives on issues like pedagogy practice, fundamental requirements for the development of robust educational content and the training needs of smart schoolteachers. It also further highlighted the best practices that can be adopted by Nigeria for a progressive and sustainable smart education system.

UBEC DRC Meet with SUBEB Directors overseeing Smart Schools

11th August 2023

The meeting with SUBEB directors overseeing smart schools had 17 directors of Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Niger, Adamawa, Sokoto, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kwara, Oyo, Osun, Benue, Cross River, Anambra States and the FCT, in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to delineate the responsibilities of UBEC and SUBEBs before the take-off of the Smart Schools. The meeting also aimed to ascertain the availability of ICT components of Smart Schools, the admission process and to obtain reports from the SUBEBs on their readiness for the September 2023 academic session.

To this end, the meeting was informed that the smart schools have been handed over to the state and SUBEB will be in charge. However, UBEC will continue to participate in the running of the schools including funding, broadband cost, maintenance of ICT gadgets, training and retraining of the smart school personnel. The SUBEBs will be responsible for the recruitment and employment of staff based on standards set by UBEC. Maintenance of infrastructure, facilities, recurrent cost, salary scheme, security and feeding of learners will also be the responsibility of the SUBEBs.

At the end of the meeting, the directors of SUBEB smart schools gave their reports on their state’s readiness for the upcoming 2023/2024 academic session. Out of the represented States, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Cross River, Ekiti, Sokoto, Gombe, Nasarawa, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kwara, Oyo, and the FCT all confirmed their readiness to begin. However, Benue State was the only state that expressed a lack of preparedness to commence operations in the Smart School.

DRC Conducts a 3-day Critique Workshop for TIS Online Courses

10th-12th January 2024

The Digital Resource Center, UBEC held a workshop to enhance the training courses on ICT and Blended Learning developed for participants in the Teacher Internship Scheme (TIS). The exercise also aimed to evaluate, critique and correct the visual design and content organization thereby improving engagement, comprehension and accessibility for the teachers. Facilitators with expertise in education and instructional design guided the critiquing process.

The Teacher Internship Scheme (TIS) is a program initiated by UBEC to enhance the skills of graduate teachers in smart education. The program lasts for two years and recruits teachers from all across the country. Once enrolled, they are posted to smart schools or e-learning centers nationwide. The TIS has components such as mentorship, professional development, a Smart Education Primer Course, a postgraduate diploma, practical experience, a teaching assistantship and community service.

The Smart Education Primer course, coordinated by the Digital Resource Centre, will begin six months before the PGD program. The DRC collaborated with experts to develop training content for the interns which is being critiqued to ensure optimum quality and standard.

Niger State Government Set to Establish Smart Schools

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, has committed to supporting the Niger State Government in a bid to transform five of its Model Science Schools into smart schools to meet up with the demands of 21st-century education. He made this assertion when he visited Science Model Primary School Chaza, Suleja, one of the proposed schools to be converted.

According to Alhaji Muhammad Baba Ibrahim, the Chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board, the government decided to upgrade some schools in the state to meet world-class standards and ensure that children in the state receive high-quality education that will enable them to compete favourably with their counterparts globally.

Before the visit of the Executive Secretary, a team from the Digital Resource Centre of UBEC, led by Dr Hafsat Lawal Kontagora, visited Model Science Schools located in Minna, Lapai, Beri, Borgu and New Bussa. The purpose of the visit was to inspect the capacity and readiness of the Model Science Schools to commence smart education.

UBEC Celebrates International Day for Girls in ICT

25th April 2024

The Universal Basic Education Commission organized a 3-day event in collaboration with Blue Sapphire Hub to commemorate the International Day for Girls in ICT held at the UBEC Digital Resource Center, Kado-Kuchi, Abuja.

The 3-day celebration featured a workshop and a boot camp for female students from twenty (20) Junior Secondary Schools in Abuja. The event included hands-on activities on topics such as Robotics, Web Development, Graphic Design, Mobile App Development, and Data Analysis.

Declaring the workshop open, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi expressed the unwavering commitment of the Commission to the utilization of ICT in education.

UBEC DRC Set to Introduce Education TV Services & Remote Learning

18th – 19th April 2024

The Digital Resource Center, UBEC held a 2-day meeting to deliberate on strategies for introducing and implementing educational TV and remote learning in Nigeria.

The meeting echoed the sentiments and intent of the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman which he expressed during his visit to UBEC DRC in January 2024.

Experts in Education TV production, educators, researchers, policymakers, Educational Content Developers, Broadcasting Specialists and ICT Experts participated in the meeting. KOICA holds Leadership Workshop for Smart School Administrators

15-16th April 2024

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in collaboration with UBEC DRC held a 2-day workshop for administrators of the six KOICA-supported model smart schools.

The workshop centred on the PMC project in the KOICA-supported Smart Education programme in Nigeria, Sharing the status of the PMC project including; infrastructure, capacity building, content development, performance evaluation, Smart School leadership and the development of a qualitative competency training framework for Smart School management as well as feasible approaches to addressing issues facing Smart School implementation in the country.

The Principals, Headteachers, Heads of ECCDE and ICT Managers of the Smart Schools in Bauchi, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Kano, Kwara States and the FCT, Abuja participated in the workshop.

KOICA Embarks on Intensive Training for Smart School Teachers

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) through their implementing management consultants Eduniety Lab Consortium trained selected teachers from the six KOICA-supported smart schools at the UBEC Digital Resource Center, Kado-Kuchi, Abuja.

The training exercise aimed to equip smart school teachers with the requisite competencies in digital educational content creation. These skills are expected to be effectively utilized in teaching learners for enhanced learning outcomes in line with 21st-century smart education best practices.

Fifty smart school teachers participated in the 21-day intensive in-service training on digital educational content development activity.

A 4-day Design, Thinking, Coding, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (DTCRA) Implementation workshop was held for selected teachers of 14 operational UBE Model Smart Schools teachers in the country.

The 4-day workshop aimed to develop the capacity of Smart school teachers on effective implementation of the DTCRA curriculum and equip them with skills to effectively utilize the robotic kits and other DTCRA tools supplied to their schools.

A total of 28 teachers participated in the workshop and were trained on the rudiments of design and computational thinking, writing simple execution commands with block-based programming, assembling simple auto-robots, creating smart devices with local DIY materials and piloting an education drone, among others.
